[Rovernet] Surplus to needs-P5 Cylinder heads

Hi Kent,
I had a feeling that it might be a bit complicated so I am glad I asked. I
have a 72 Land Rover with a 6 cylinder in it that is going to be put in my
1960 Rover 100 to use while I have the original engine with 200K on it
rebuilt. The Land Rover engine is a fresh engine and I know very little
about it but I feel that it is not a 7:1 but a higher compression engine and
wanted to have some options to get a bit more power out of it but I will
give it a try first then see what I must do. The Rover P4 100 engine is very
peppy but it burned the valve on number 6 so it is time to do it over and
that will take a while. I want to keep the P4 as original as I can since it
is number 3 off the line for that year of LHD exports. Thanks for the
information and I still may be interested in one of the Westlake heads since
they have the manifold that can be removed.
Regards,
Ben

Hi Ben,
If the IOE 6 in question is a 1967 NAS station wagon with the P4 110 engine,
then the answer is "maybe." The 110 engine shared the Mk.
IIc/Mk. III archetecture which included an oil drain-back at the rear of the
head/block. My understanding is that you can use a Mk.IIa/IIb head on the
later block if the drain-back in the block is sealed. Likewise using the
later head on the early block requires some method of sealing the drain-back
in the head.

If the 6 cylinder in question is another model, I would guess that it would
not fit at all, but that answer would require more research. I think all
other 6 cylinder Land Rovers used the P4 100/95 architecture in which the
lifters, lower and upper rockers and pushrods differed from the Weslake head
engines. I would have to check parts numbers to be sure and I have moved all
my manuals out to the shop.

Roverly,
Kent K
