You are correct on both things. 
I do remember that Rover suggested to go to 50W for those who lived in
colder climates but I feel that the pump is still the weak link in the
design. If your frok or throw out are having issues then that just may be
the greater problem.

90W sure does sound too heavy. Clutch issues can, of course, cause
difficulty getting in/out of gear, so I'd fix that first!
