[Rovernet] p5 rough running after warm up

Hi Peter,

Also try removing the petrol cap to see if build up of vacuum overwhelms the
fuel pump. Just after the car stalls, open the cap, a rush of air indicates
blocked tank breather Is the choke sticking on? Are the carby's temperature
compensating like on later P6B's? Does the coil get very hot? Does the air
inlet have a later fitted temperature compensating flap like on the 2200.?
Just before the car stalls do you get the sensation of "hunting" with a
strong petrol smell in the exhaust? Lots of questions from your diagnostic
colleagues Cheers Roger in Oz

Peter,

It might be worth trying the original coil and original points and
condenser to rule out the new coil and new electronic ignition. A
timing light would show whether the distributor advance (base plate,
springs, vacuum advance) is working. A Mighty Vac or similar hand
vacuum pump could be used to test the vacuum advance diaphragm. I'm not
sure if a failed diaphragm would ever show up as a temperature related
problem.

Or maybe it is more of a time-related problem, ie. 20 minutes of running
time? This could be something like crud in the fuel tank gradually
collecting on the pickup tube screen, or filter, or ???, then falling
back when the engine stops. Does it restart easily and run ok for
awhile or still have the same problem when restarted hot?
