The SD1 is certainly a rare car in the UK, but has faired no worse than contemporaries, more likely has survived much better. Somewhere around 500 on the road (in the UK), though very few in daily use - even the youngest SD1s are now approaching 30 years old. They have been an overlooked classic, but there is more interest in them of late. The SD1s profile has been raised recently by a TV programme featuring their use as British police cars during the 1970s and 1980s.

As for lack of thrust, even the North American Specification SD1 should be pretty quick. Before embarking on lots of changes, have a look at the camshaft on the car - these can wear spectacularly and the car run pretty well, just being down on power. Many of the NAS models I've seen have suffered from poor oil change regimes, probably in the first few years of ownership. The Rover V8 does very well from regular oil changes - at least yearly, ideally 3000 miles or less.
