Hi Peter,

At the risk of overloading you with suggestions...

Have you tried swapping the coil?  Many (very many) years ago I had a 
similar problem on my P4 and the coil was the culprit. I forget whether 
the problem was shorted turns in the primary or secondary, but a new 
coil exorcised the gremlin.

Speaking of coils, make certain any replacement really is a 12 volt 
coil, unless your car has a ballast resistor for an 8 volt coil.  Most 
coils available off the shelf these days seem to assume the presence of 
such a resistor, and will heat up and eventually burn out if used on a 
12 volt system without one.
