It's not uncommon for rear seals to "go," but doesn't mean the game's over. First, why did the rear S fail and any signs the other mains are faulty? A quick test/fix would be to loosen the other main bearings and remove the the rear main cap. Rotate the crank in the direction of the troublesome bearing while putting pressure on the troublesome bearing with a slim pusher in the direction of the bearing keeper (has a wide spot with a bearing lock "nipple" on one end of the bearing.) That will rotate the bearing out of its seat. You can reinstall it be continuing to rotate the crank while putting pressure to hold the bearing tightly to the crank journal. If the bearing looks ok (not distorted), then rotate the bearing back into its niche, remove the questionable seal by putting pressure on one end of the seal while turning the crank in the direction of the bearing lock nipple until you can turn the bearing and seal out of their seats. Fit the new bearing into its crankcase seat by rotating a new bearing into its crankcase web seat. Button 'er up and test for rotatability - - - firm but not tight. You can measure the "play" with shims of shimstock of varying tightness or plastic tolerance gauges, tightening and them removing them until you get a "squashed" plastic gauge that matches the tolerance specs. If you can't get a "good" reading this way, then the distortion my be due to distortion in the crankshaft or bearing cap. Wont take you long to get acquainted with the ass'y and find out if you can restore the bearing fit to tolerable specs. Bearing shells come in varying "undersizes," to take up for bearing/journal wear and thus approximate original bearing tolerances. Keep in mind margins of allowable tolerance/play between bearing thickness and crankshaft journal wear. Crank journal distortion is relatively rare; bearing distortion due to wear is far more likely.

I have a 1968 TC2000 with a serious oil leak. It leaks into the transmission casing so I am guessing that it is the rear main seal. In looing in the repair manual it seem that it is a big job and the seal is in one piece? Any suggestion would be helpful. Larry
