Hi Sean,

Glad you are in touch with wise minds and practical suggestions on Rovernet.

Have you considered whether you will take the gearbox out with the engine in
place or the engine and gearbox together. There are advantages and
disadvantages with both that others may comment on. You say you have the car
"slung up". Do you mean its on a hoist? Can you get easy access underneath?
In my experience removing the gearbox on its own is extremely difficult
unless you have excellent access like a full height hoist with room for a
helper. As I recall, it is necessary to tilt the engine which means removing
various plumbing bits I wonder whether you will find it easier to remove
both engine and gearbox. This will enable the type of maintenance Gianni
refers to that is so much easier with the engine out. That is, removing the
side plates and water pump and cleaning out the cooling system (that is
likely to be full of rubbish with a car that old). It will also be easier to
remove the flywheel if it needs to be machined. You will need to remove the
radiator for an engine out and that gives you the opportunity to properly
reverse flush it. When you fit the new clutch remember to use a tool to
centre the clutch plate on the flywheel as you progressively tighten the
pressure plate bolts. Otherwise connecting the two up again will be
impossible. With the box out, consider renovating the guides for the gear
selection rods. Good luck.

Cheer Roger in Oz
