I heartily suggest that while you have your starter out that you fit a
STAINLESS STEEL cotter pin, which are much better able to withstand the
violent torque thrusts of the Bendix mechanism. Standard cotter pins just
don't have the strength to stand up to those kinds of forces. I don't have
time to tell you the full story but it goes back nearly 50 years to my very
first Land-Rover and today we ALWAYS to use the s.s. pins.
