Search on "Charcoal canister rebuild" and you'll find both sources and techniques for restoring these things, some from the MGB community.

As is always a good idea when it comes to things British, consider delving into the MGB community, as there are so many of them that at least one person has tried what you’re considering and posted about it.

Solutions I have seen include applying a torch to the Charcoal to “reactivate” it and replacing it with fresh charcoal used for fish tank filtration. Some creativity may be required to open the canister.

That being said, you might consider drilling a functional hole on the underside to 'recharge' them with charcoal. I was imagining something such as a rubber stopper one finds on a large salt/pepper shaker for future servicing.
