G’day John

I should be working but your problem is intriguing. Does the engine stop on an incline? Does it feel like it is running out of fuel on the incline? I wonder whether you should try disconnecting the fuel line into a container at the carby and check that the fuel pump is delivering at a satisfactory rate (if it is electric just turn the ignition on, if it is manual you will need to crank the engine over with the starter) . Check if it make any difference with the fuel filler cap off (eliminating tank breather problems). It may be that the fuel delivery is insufficient for the extra usage on an incline. Trust this helps

Cheers form Oz

Subject: [Rovernet] 1958 Rover P4 60 Loss of power uphill

Hello Everyone,

I had an unusual loss of power today and wanted to get some feedback. I drove my 1958 Rover P4 60 model to dinner and the 15 minute drive was fun and uneventful. The drive home was difficult. It was about 90 degrees and humid. I was experiencing an extreme loss of power as I tried to start out in 1st gear. Then I could get it going but as soon as I got to a slight incline in the road, the car would bog down and loose power. It would chug up the hill about 4 mph until I got to a straight away and then I could take off again. I stalled on one hill and folks helped to push me into a parking lot. I installed a new SU fuel pump, new spark plugs, and cleaned the fuel bowl screen about six weeks ago and all seemed good. I use premium gas. The fuel bowl was full of gas, as I checked after stalling.

Is this a case of vapor lock? Any suggestions or folks that have experienced similar issues with comments would be greatly appreciated!

John Davis

I have a 90 827 which drives superbly but has interior wear. The rust on this example looks bad. Since it has Honda mechanicals, parts are readily available. Real luxury, Connolly leather, memory seats, speed-sensitive steering, etc. 0-60 in 7.7s, 30+ mpg, 2800lb, and plenty of rear seat room. too bad more were not sold.
