Lance,
As mentioned the diff units are unique to the P6 and up to about 1973 they differed significantly between 2000 and 3500. Later diffs were the same except for numbering and gear ratio (2000 is 3.54 to one V8 is 3.08). If you need to buy one try to get one with the letter E or F stamped after (ish) the number under the grease on the bottom. They are a much better build and the F ones don't leak...in theory.
Having said that, the wearing parts like bearings etc. area all standard fitment and can be purchased locally by number or from the usual Rover suppliers. I think Wins may even have a new V8 gear set.
You really need to do the wheel turning test with the transmission in Park so the tailshaft doesn't turn when you turn the wheel. By the sound of it your issue is actually in the drive shaft or wheel hub no the diff. I'd put the hand brake on and try to turn the wheel; there should be no movement. If Movement present you can check the UJoints by putting your fingers between the knuckles and gently rocking the shaft. You will feel even very small movements. Finally I'd be unbolting the right shaft from the diff, checking the UJoints as described earlier and if ok turning the axle shaft to see if it is stiff in the wheel hub. You should also be able to turn the brake disc (handbrake off) noting that the diff gears are a bit clunky from the factory (but they shouldn't stick). Oh and check the bolt that holds the front of the diff extension is done up tight and the mount is in one piece.
