[Rovernet] P6 diff

Yes the diff from 2000 and 3500 are physically interchangeable. And the ratios are different… 2000 is 3.48 manual and automatic and the 3500 is 3.08. I’ve been running a 3500 diff in my 2000TC since the early 80s… even pulled trailers and other Rovers. Yes, first gear is ‘slow’ but it does work quite well. Brakes and half shafts fit either unit.

Thanks for all the input.

Makes me think? I have differential out of 3500s as well. Are they compatible. I would think gear ratios may be different(auto vs man in the tc). Comments?

My half shaft fractured through, fortunately in front of my house. It obviously had been in strain; the shaft was bent-rotated 2-3 deg, before fracture. The opposite also showed strain at the same place, the inner end of the spline.

There is a slot in the collar so a machine shop can press the stub axle out of the collar, so it isn't essential to machine it off. Very early cars didn’t have the slot, they had to be machined off.

Though Rover wanted you to replace the collar, you can reuse them as long as they haven’t been damaged during removal. New ones are available.

If you are going to replace the seal, you should replace the bearing too. And take a very, very close look at the stub axles themselves. They develop cracks in the spline area, right were you see the wear marks stop and then eventually shear.

Both the seal & bearing can be sourced locally, collars are an England item though there are drawings available to have one machined up. Stub axles are difficult to find new I think.

Hi Steve,

There are collars on the small shafts that go into the differential that are best machined off. The original ones were pressed on. These collars need to be removed to replace the differential seals. I’m not sure how available the collars are, but new ones can be made and pressed on. The seals I am sure are available. You might as well replace the seal at the aluminum end of the differential as well. You will likely need a machine shop to pull the flange off. They need to be careful. The flange itself can bend.

Best of luck.

Jess

1/2 shafts out. I have the strap in place already to make sure that didn’t happen while working on it. The seals are bad on one side leaking fluid out onto the brakes. Looks like England for the parts. Anybody have another source?

Are the half shafts still in it? Other than those flopping around, the only thing you have to do is run a rope or ratchet strap between the two trailing arms or the elbows, so the wheels don't try and walk apart and over-extend the DeDion tube and/or get hung up in the wheelwells.

Hello all
I have the differential out of my p6 2000tc for repairs. Turns out to be a little longer to get parts and I would like to take the car down off the jack stands and move it to another location. Anybody think that is a dumb idea, could be bad news?
