Perhaps your memory of driving the car is better than mine of driving my MkIIA several decades ago. I thought that it went into direct drive at a certain speed unless you had chosen the second speed lock.

FWIW, the Chrysler “Powerflite” on my dad’s 56 Windsor only had 2 gears, no lock up. The indestructible 3 sp 727 started in 56-7, and needed more buttons!
