When I say straighforward, I was talking more about the procedure. The remote repair certainly adds difficulty. In terms of things going south, four main challenges: You don't know the exact state of the engine. How long did it run after the cam broke, if in fact that’s what’s wrong; If the head gasket is dodgy, you might get a leak even using the official method and while it’s not much more work once you've got the cam our, the leak wont show until you’ve but it back together, so the job turns into 2.5x; Dealing with the upper chain tensioner can be a hassle, particularly if it’s been replaced with one without the plug in the back to retract the plunger spring; And last, you have to have enough shims on hand to reset the valve clearances to something reasonable.
