Hi Gord,
In my experience, re-lubricating the cable with Molyslip or graphite in
heavy oil usually helps. Disconnect the cable from the speedo head,
pull out the core, apply lube and feed it back into the sheath. I don't
know if the P5 uses a right-angle gearbox at the speedo end like the P6,
but if it does, lubricate this also. But sometimes a new cable is the
only answer.
Another possibility if you have a Smiths (or British Jaeger) speedo: In
these, the mileage counter is worked by a little pawl-and-ratchet
arrangement. If this gets stiff, it puts an increased load on the
speedo drive while the pawl is trying to push the ratchet wheel around
one notch (which moves the 1/10 mile wheel), and eases the load when the
pawl is withdrawing. This puts a much lower frequency flicker on the
speedo needle, and not quite so kangaroo-like. Again, lubrication is
the remedy.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
