[Rovernet] Abundance of air when bleeding

After several years of the '68 TC sitting in my garage, I finally got around to rebuilding the front calipers.. Problem was, the fluid reservoir had gone completely dry during the interim. Bleeding the brakes produce mostly air, so much that the fluid coming out of the caliper nozzle looks like milk!    Am I correct in guessing that the brake master has so much air in it that the brake fluid doesn't have much of a chance to get through? If so, is it necessary to "bench bleed " the master, or is there an easier alternative than removing the master?  Your thoughts please, oh wise Rover buddies.
