Thanks to all for the continuing support regarding the headlights/blown fuses. A special shout out to Michael for the excellent, detailed recommendations. I've checked the continuity of the hi/low beam switch and just finished confirming that all of the
wiring directly behind the headlights is proper. I will dive into the fuse box itself and the the steering column switches. Given my neanderthal skill set with electricity, I'm still amazed that both the main and dip beams work together when the main
beam switch is engaged but there are no dip beams at all when the main beam switch (the one on the floor) is disengaged (this is when the fuse blows repeatedly for the dip beam)??????</div>

The headlight wiring varies quite a bit between models, the '68 manual has the diagram for the NADA cars. The high and low beams on the 12 fuse cars are completely separate for most of their run hence high beam works when low beam won't. there are no relays
in the system so if youhave upped the wattage of the bulbs significantly you can overheat various bits, the main things to check are the fusebox terminals (they aren't a true clip in fuse holder, they are left and right side blades held apart by plastic),
Then pull all the excess wire out from behind the lights themselves and check its all plugged in properly. Then check the steering columns switches. The current flows through rivets in these and they can corrode up or the insulator breaks ( me thinks this
is probably it given the symptoms). Taking the steering wheel off is worth the effort to do this task properly. If they are stuffed I've got spares. Finally check that both charging wires from the alternator are plugged into the Alternator. Some Mechanics
will leave one off floating around and it can short to lots of things.<br>

Most of the time the problem is with the wires themselves in that the British do not tin their wires and thus they corrode over the years and this causes resistance as well as corroded terminals making the threshold far too marginal and making the fuses fail.
The best option would be to find an old harness and buy new wires in the same color and weight to make a new harness. A bit of work but you will sleep better.<br>

Have you checked the correct operation of the high beam low beam switch. <br>
It might pay to remove it and carefully examine for wear/dirt etc that may be interfering with the contacts and earth. If you have a circuit diagram you may be able to test each circuit after disconnecting the harness from the switch. A broken fuse implies
a short circuit somewhere and this procedure may clarify which one. Lucas "The Prince of Darkness".<br>
