<p>It's a reasonable question. What happens is that the gasket
engages the thread, and thus one side of the gasket sits in the
bottom of the V of the thread. Then it just screws on till it
gets to the bottom of the threaded section of the plug.</p>

threaded section of the plug is 0.82, then how can the old
washer with an ID of 0.817 fit over the plug (i.e., 0.817 is a
smaller diameter than 0.82).</div>
