Years back I had a similar problem with a Rover TC 2000 and used a piece
of brass pipe that I threaded the inside of and then rounded it off and
grooved it in the center using a drill press I think. Threaded the end
of the shift leaver and put an O-ring in the groove which worked well
and was very quiet. I may have also put a small holding bolt and washer
in the end of the leaver as a back up to keep the ball from coming
loose. It was a long time ago.
