[Rovernet] 1967 P6 TC2000

In the early '70s, shortly after acquiring my '67 2000TC, I noted what uneven wear on the front of the otherwise still good Pirellis.  I was advised this was camber wear but that nothing could be done as it was not adjustable.  I suffered through several pairs of front tires assuming this was just one of the many costs of P6 ownership.  In the late '70s I mentioned this situation to the legendary, and late, Ron Jones of San Antonio telling him the car had been checked several times and the toe spec was per factory.  Ron said that the factory spec was simply wrong and the front end should have more toe than called for.  When I pressed for a number he said he didn't know but offered the following solution.  

Install some new or unworn tires on the front and drive the car about 40 miles.  Then run your hands across the tread feeling for any sharpness or 'feathers' in one direction.  If the inner edge of the tire has been wearing then the wheels are toeing out too much as a result of road forces and you'll feel a sharpness on the tread as you move your hand from outer to inner but not the other direction.  If you feel feathers in this direction then adjust the track rod for more toe in.  At the time I was driving 60 miles each way for work and at the end of each commute I would get out, feel the tires, pull out the wrenches and make the appropriate adjustment.  After about four adjustments any noticeable wear disappeared.  I do not know what the toe spec is on my car but I have experienced no uneven wear problems in the 35 years and 100k miles since.  This alignment has worked with 165, 175, 185 and my current 195/60 series tires.  

Speaking of tires... if you're looking for the OE tire in the OE size they are being reproduced.  http://www.lucasclassictires.com/Pirelli-Cinturato_c54.htm  Unfortunately they do not have the 'gold stripe' but are otherwise correct.  I've not tried this tire and can't vouch for quality or any dynamic characteristics but I can comment that at $200 each they had damn well better be good.
