[Rovernet] play in 3500s differential

Hi Lance,

Thanks for confirming that. I also had my tranny checked and re-sealed and replaced all the u-joints except the half shafts. Now it’s their turn. My tranny has leaked like a sieve ever since I had it re-assembled with new seals, and the guy who did that disappeared, but that’s another story and a future project to undertake…

in the meantime, I’m enjoying the never ending learning experience. I had the Dedion tube apart yesterday, trying to understand just how it works. My gaiter was torn, and I had fashioned a makeshift one out of garbage bags and duct tape, which held up pretty well. The confusing thing was that once I removed the duct tape, the inner tube was freely moving in both directions inside the outer tube—the retaining clip was not preventing it from moving past the seal and retaining ring. So I was actually able to slide the inner tube out completely without removing the retaining clip. It appears that the clip is designed to prevent the tube from slipping past the steel retaining washer, so any “telescoping” would be inward, wheel-to-wheel, vs. outward. For some reason, this clip was not doing its job.

Looking forward to a one day clunkless, dripless, un-sluggish ride in the 3500s!

Peter

I had a really bad 'clunk' but it was only at slow speeds, usually when the car was coming to a stop. Turned out it indeed was a bad u-joint. The bad news; the other 'clunk' from engaging the transmission never went away. I remember we've had this conversation several times on Rovernet, and apparently that clunk is almost a badge of honor with that atrocious BW35. I've never been able to eliminate it, even after having the tranny completely rebuilt and then replacing all of the u-joints along the entire drive line.

A “blank space” before engaging. How much play is normal, and what’s the best way to measure this? I made a set of marks on the outer edge of the brake disc, and measured 3/4” of “blank space” when I move the wheel back and forth. I have no idea if that’s a meaningful measurement, but it’s a place to start the conversation.
