[Rovernet] P6 Differential gears [SEC=UNOFFICIAL]

I replaced my 3.08:1 gearset with a new 2200 3.54:1 set. There are some significant differences. ALL V8 diffs are four pinion while 2000diffs are mostly 2 pinion on a different carrier. Later 2000 and I think all 2200s use the dame 4 pinion carrier. The V8s also have two distinct differences in the size of the mounting set screws for the ring gear. They don't interchange without machining. Check the 2200 and 3500 parts manuals and the suffix letter on your diff case. 2200 diffs area essentially the same as 3500 diffs except for the gearset. There were only ever two ratios available from Rover 3.54:1 in the 4 cyl cars and 3.08 in the V8s. If someone knows of another source please let us know! The last few years of production saw significant improvements to the diff unit so your best diff is the last one which is suffix F from memory. The F is stamped on the bottom of the case after the serial no. (or somewhere near it) Many of the changes are to do with sealing and keeping the oil inside. You will need the pinion height adjusting tool. There is or was one on ebay at the moment but it is the same as the Land rover one - same shims too...so land rover guys should have one. The difference in performance is marked. My automatic V8 is a much nicer drive. You will need to swap to a 2000/2200 speedo. Be very careful when removing the extension shaft to keep the sleeve which joins the input shaft to the pinion shaft ON THE INPUT SHAFT. Don't take it off they are balanced together but can get a bit loose over time. If you need more info reply to this email.

Going to install a set of 3.45 differential gears in place of my current 3:08 set. Got to make it up those hills in San Francisco. Any advice on installation is much appreciated!!!

The jockey belt is loose, and screeches when the compressor comes on. I can see the compressor belt slow down, so it is not the c belt slipping. Plus the J belt looks old. The book says adjustment bolts in 1 section, "bolt" in another. When I remove the depicted bolt, the pulley is still tight. I cannot see or feel a 2nd bolt. Help please!

Jonathan, I went the other way. I replaced the whole rear end in my TC 2000 from a 3..45 rear end to a 3.08 rear end. I know nothing about changing just the gears. It was just a bolt in job. I lived in SF for four years. I know about the hills and having a stick shift. Larry

It's a direct swap. Years ago I went from the 3:48 to a 3:08 in my '67 2000TC by replacing the entire diff. Swap is an easy remove and replace.
Caution though as I understand the 2000 differential is not as 'strong' as
the 3500 diff... look at those extra fins.

I used to correspond with a guy in New Zealand that swapped just the gears from his 3:08 diff to the gears from a 3:48 which retained the stiffness from the 3:08 diff case for use in his 4 spd 3500S.

Never a fan of the BOP 3.5 V8... I'm still considering a swap to the Ford 302. Let's see... the Ford oils, it cools, it has power, it's good enough for Cobras and Mustangs... hmmm.

If you want the SBF to be as light as the Rover V8, you'll have to fit ally heads.

Aluminum heads are great. I own a NADA 3500S that I installed a 4.0 Discovery engine in about 20 years ago. It is still going strong. This winter, I installed a Ford 302 engine in a 1995 Volvo 960 station wagon.
This was Volvo's last rear wheel drive model. I built an '89 Mustang 302 engine up to moderate power, with a carb and Edelbrock aluminum heads, a cam and my parts car's 5 speed T5 trans. I will take it for it's first drive in a few days. It should be fun! A 302 might be fun in a Rover if weight was not too overwhewlming for it!
