I had to replace the final drive in my '93 Range Rover a few years back, 
and fitted a Discovery unit.  Only difference was the flange on the 
Discovery FD was thicker than that of the RR FD, and hence some of the 
studs sticking out of the housing were not long enough to engage a nut. 
(Of course I didn't find this out till after I had put the FD in!).

Another point: I have some recollection the the RR final drive had more 
half shaft splines than the P5 units of the same ratio. I have an old P5 
FD and was going to use it to replace the damaged one in my RR, but 
couldn't for some reason, and that may have been it.  Worth checking, 
anyway.
