This should not be able to happen if the locktabs were fitted.

i have a more frightful story: after months of scraping and vibration, nothing to be seen, the car suddenly lost brakes.  Looking under, a pool of fluid right front. The bolts holding the caliper on were loose or out and the caliper finally detached.... hanging by the hose... fortunately it could be fixed on site, no tow needed.

The good news is you got it before major damage. Life is all about learning...

Thanks for the update, always good to find out what the problem was. Especially when it’s as scary as that. Not only do those bolts transmit power and braking forces, they also transmit cornering loads to the differential and its mounts!

Sent from a small screen, please excuse any typos.

First, many thanks to all who provided very helpful diagnostic ideas regarding my vibration problems, initial suspect being an unbalance drive shaft.
Checked all the drivetrain mounts; rock solid.    Driveshaft also completely stable.    No movement/slop in any of the universals joints,
BUT as I'm working my way back from the transmission to the drive shaft to the rear differential---VOILA,  two of the 4 bolts holding the left half- shaft and inboard disc to the differential are gone!!!!!!!     The half-shaft is hanging by the remaining two bolts which were on their way out as well!!!!
The moral of this little escape for me is, as usual: The more I know, the more I know what I don't know.
Hopefully this will be helpful information to others........
