If they've been dismantled before using a generic spring compressor that other posters have already shown, they may not be aligned in which the rods will be of no use at all. I've always done them with generic spring compressors, fiddly and lack of room doesn't help but it can be done. For additional safety I chain the spring to where the bell crank bolts to the firewall, if it should make a break for freedom it wouldn't get very far.
