Years ago I replaced the rear main bearing oil seal in a pair of P6Bs I
owned at the time.
These use the early rope type of seal, not the neoprene type which began
with the SD1s.
I was able to pull the engine pan off with the engine in place. As I recall
I had to
disconnect the front motor mounts and lift the engine a bit using a block
of wood to hold it up. I was then able to remove the pan and replace the
BOTTOM portion or bearing cap side of the seal only. It is virtually impossible
to replace the upper half
with the engine in the car. It you try to do so you may not be able to put
a new upper half in because it is thicker than the old seal and then you are
really up a creek. In most cases just replacing the bearing cap portion of
the seal will reduce leaking to unobjectionable levels. Its a chance you
take.
While the pan is off, be sure to do a good cleaning job and have a new pan
gasket ready. Torque all bolts to Rover specs
The rope seal itself is the same as the Buick 215 and can be bought at
NAPA.
