My method for withdrawing the hydraulic piston is to use air. Push the piston down with your finger. Then let it go and put high pressure air into the cylinder. The piston will bang against the retainer and will push it out a little bit. Repeat the action until the retainer is pushed out of the cylinder. Use an air gun with a rubber tip to seal against the fluid port.
