[Rovernet] Rovernet Digest, Vol 101, Issue 10

Hello from Oz and seasons greetings.

Done the job several times and I have found that these bolts are quite soft and I have successfully drilled a tap hole in the stubs of the bolts and used an “Easy Out” to unscrew the bolts. But overall a complex awkward job, especially repairing the switching and coping with (a likely) worn key. It isn’t too difficult to make a new separate switch for the circuits and I like the idea of a push to start in the cigar lighter. In this way you can preserve the steering lock function.

Cheers Roger

Yet another way to get the lock out is to weld a nut onto each of the "breakaway bolt" heads, loosen the "tamper-proof" bolts and then take the lock to a locksmith. There were several different makes of locks so finding the right key may be a challenge but doesn't your lock also lock the steering column?

Thank you for your enquiry for our parts and services. We offer the highest-quality spare parts for the vintage Land -Rover. Our staff is minuscule while the demand for rare and “unobtainable” parts for early Land-Rovers is relentless. While your concern is important to us, our ability to respond to each and every enquiry may be limited and stocks of many items are critically low.. We are primarily a restoration-based enterprise but when we have a surplus of a given  item, we are able to offer excess stocks to our dedicated clients. If your need is urgent, we encourage you to contact us by phone, in person. Leaving a message is rarely effective, so we recommend direct contact. With many buildings full of parts, it is not always easy to locate obscure items, and the process is often time consuming. We hope you understand. Please provide complete details of your exact model including year, wheelbase, which side drive, engine, Country of origin, etc. When giving part numbers, please also state the catalogue number (typically found on the front cover).  We appreciate your understanding and will do all we can to help.

Hi All

The mechanical work has largely been done on my 2000TC.  It needs a repaint but the body shop lost my ignition key.  (No I don?t have a copy since no one around here could make one reportedly.)

Anyone have a replacement lock with key?   This lock is mounted on the steering column.

Thanks for any help.

So the car has a steering lock? You?ve got a bit of a problem then. The entire assembly was serviced as a unit and the real problem is that it?s held onto the steering column with two breakaway bolts so it?s a real pain to remove, as you have to drill the bolts out.

There must be a locksmith somewhere near you that can cut a key. Good luck.

If it helps, I believe the ignition lock is the same as the NADA 3500S with column lock.

Bob,

One thing to add is that the ignition locks on late Federal 2000TCs and
all Federal 3500Ss are specific to LHD cars due to the angle of the
steering column relative to the switch panel.

If you don't find a locksmith or used replacement ignition lock
solution, I believe Pierre Janusz (aka Voking2000 on ebay UK, and he is
here on Rovernet too) had some new ones for LHD P6's.

Also, the correct key blank is LF4, such as this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/193833954599?hash=item2d21676d27:g:jKcAAOSwFOpf8elK
or this:
https://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/371499633480?hash=item567f1a8b48:g:APQAAOSwLJZc4tfo

There is a pair on ebay USA; the link looks too long to paste here, but
the item number is 304144749172, "Key Blank - X13 Vintage Vauxhall,
Rover, Bedford CF, Other B/L (set of 2) LF4"

I had a spare key for my 3500S cut from one of these blanks when I was
in the UK one time.? I don't recall if I tried any locksmiths in the US,
but it was no problem in the UK.
