[Rovernet] Dunlop brake bleeding

Roger, et. al.:

I have a Gunson Eezi-bleed, which is a pressure bleeder generally used with a spare tire aired down to 20 PSI. It has always worked quite well for me, and comes with a selection of caps to fit different cars. It also nicely includes a bottle to hold additional fluid, so you don’t have to worry about running out of fluid as much. Unfortunately, it didn’t work with the Rover, this time, for whatever reason. The Speed Bleeders did the trick quite well, though.

One nice benefit of the speed bleeder over the pressure bleeder is that the reservoir cap with the low fluid switch stays in place, and you can just crack the bleeder a 1/4 turn, fire up the engine to get vacuum to the servo, and pump away until you see the “BRAKE” light illuminate. No risk of letting the fluid level get too low and introducing air! Chock the wheels, as you’ll have to have it out of gear and with the parking brake disengaged.

I have fitted an air hose coupling into the screw top of the brake fluid cannister and set my compressor to 5 pounds delivery. I then connect a clear plastic tube to the bleed screw emptying into a glass jar. I then unscrew the bleeder and the air pressure in the cannister pushes fluid out of the calliper. Initially air bubbles are evident in the plastic tube, but when the fluid is clear then I know the calliper is bled completely. I then replenish fluid in the cannister and move to the other callipers. This is a one man job and does not involve pressing the brake pedal. I have used this procedure when changing boosters, callipers and hoses. I also use it when replacing the fluid at service intervals (when I use a different coloured fluid). The only catch is to ensure that the cannister does not empty. Cheers from Roger in Oz
